Where your Share content comes from

A template does not hold the words and pictures for a post. It holds instructions for where to find them, and Echobox follows those instructions each time it builds a post from an article. This is set on the Message and Elements tabs in Studio.

The message

On the Message tab, choose where the post text is taken from:

  • OG Title and OG Description come from the article's own social sharing tags, which is what most networks read when a link is pasted.
  • RSS Title and RSS Description come from your content feed.
  • Twitter Title and Twitter Description come from the article's Twitter card tags, where they differ from the OG ones.
  • Keep Empty leaves the field blank.

You can add a prefix or a suffix around it, which is useful for hashtags or a "link in bio" note.

The article image

On the Elements tab, Article image decides which picture the design uses:

  • OG Image is the article's own sharing image. This is the usual choice.
  • RSS Image comes from your content feed.
  • Twitter Image takes the image from the article's Twitter card tags and uses it inside your design.
  • None attaches no image of your own. The post publishes as a plain link, and the network builds its own preview from the article. On X that is the article's Twitter card.

Overlay text

Overlay text is the headline printed onto a Studio-generated image. As well as the same feed and tag options above, you can choose:

  • Teaser, Article summary and Sentence from article, which Echobox writes for you based on the article.
  • Call-to-action, which uses the fixed line you have written rather than anything from the article.
  • None, for a design with no headline on it.

Highlight key phrases picks out the important words in the headline and emphasises them, using your highlight colour.

Call to action

Call to action is a line of your own that appears on the image, such as "Read more" or "Full story on our site".

You can include your site's domain in it by typing [domain], which Echobox replaces when it builds the post. So "Read more at [domain]" produces "Read more at yourwebsite.com".

Keeping a field empty

Keep Empty means "leave this out on purpose". Use this when you want a field to stay blank rather than fall back to whatever the article provides.

Why did a post come out with no image?

If a template asks for an image the article does not have, there is nothing for Echobox to use and the post cannot be generated. The usual causes are:

  • The article has no OG image and the template asks for OG Image.
  • The feed entry has no image and the template asks for RSS Image.

Two things can help. Set Article image to the source your articles reliably carry, which for most publishers is OG Image. If you would rather the network show its own preview card than have Echobox build an image, set Article image to None.
